Peter Gaughran

I recently gave an instruction to use the left rib cage (openning lower rear ribs against twist) to help plant the lower left side of the body when twisting to the right . However, I was questioned by a student who had heard the advice "alllow the lower belly to guide you into the twist." I'm confused, shouldn't most of the twisting be happening behind the upper back? When I hear The lower belly advice, I feel like the spine doesn't have stability or the downward "planting" action that I was taught a twist needs. Yes the opening of the rib cage may be excessive, but I wanted students to feel the rib cage's connection to the lower back. Any thoughts? Maybe both directions can live in harmony. Thanks , Sincerely Peter Gaughran
